1️⃣ Raw Onion & Clove Salad (Subtle Version)
Best for: Pairing with grilled meats or rich dishes
Ingredients:
-
1 large red onion, very thinly sliced
-
1–2 whole cloves (or a tiny pinch of ground cloves)
-
Juice of 1 lemon
-
1–2 tbsp olive oil
-
Salt
-
Optional: chopped parsley or mint
How to use the cloves:
-
Lightly crush 1–2 whole cloves and steep them in the lemon juice for 5–10 minutes.
-
Remove the cloves before mixing with the onions.
This gives a warm, slightly sweet undertone without making the dish taste medicinal.
2️⃣ Pickled Raw Onions with Clove
Best for: Tacos, sandwiches, rice dishes
Ingredients:
-
1 red onion, thinly sliced
-
½ cup vinegar
-
½ cup warm water
-
1 tsp sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
1–2 whole cloves
-
Optional: bay leaf, peppercorns
Add the whole cloves to the pickling liquid and let sit at least 30 minutes. Remove before serving if you prefer a lighter flavor.
3️⃣ Indian-Style Onion Relish (Very Small Amount!)
Inspired by flavors common in dishes from India.
Finely chop:
-
1 onion
-
Fresh chili
-
Cilantro
-
Lemon juice
-
A tiny pinch of ground cloves (VERY tiny — less than 1/16 tsp)
Clove pairs well with cumin, coriander, and garam masala — but always use it sparingly.
⚠️ Important Tips
-
Use whole cloves rather than ground for better control.
-
Start small — you can always add more.
-
Clove flavor intensifies over time.
-
If it tastes too strong, add more onion or lemon to balance it.
